Split Ball Design
A "Split Ball" design involves an axial
separation of the ball into two halves, which allows the individual
halves to be inserted axially into the outer race, then rotated into
alignment within the outer race - eliminating the need for the
"entry window" of the slotted entry design. However,
manufacturing expertise and control are crucial in matching the
"halves" to retain sphericity, uniform clearance, etc. -
thus allowing the design to function properly in the application.
Why Are They Used?
The split ball design eliminates the "entry
window", thus provides unidirectional axial load
capabilities, more total bearing area, more capacity, high
capacity, High stiffness, etc. Bearing should not be
clamped on ball.
Where Are They Used?
Secondary control systems, such as, slats and
flaps, plus applications like landing gear retract actuators,
fix end of flight control actuator.
What Is Available?
